Collectibles Insurance
Protect single prized pieces and full collections - coverage built for what Homeowners policies miss.
Collectibles Insurance
Whether you are just getting started with a few special pieces or you’ve built an impressive collection, you put time, money, and heart into it.
Collectibles Insurance: Protect the Things You Collect (and Love)
Standard Homeowners and Condo insurance are fantastic for everyday belongings, but they are not built for collectibles. Special limits, exclusions, and valuation rules can leave surprise gaps when it matters most.
Good news: Perfect California Insurance Agency now partners with Collectibles Insurance Services (CIS) to offer purpose-built protection designed for beginner and serious collectors alike.
Add Your Heading Text Here
Your policy has a Personal Property section that covers your stuff – furniture, clothes, electronics… and yes, art and jewelry are technically “personal property.” Here’s the catch:
- Special limits: Many policies cap certain categories (jewelry, watches, silverware, firearms, etc.) at very low amounts for theft and other losses – often nowhere near the real value of even a small collection.
- Per-item caps and exclusions: Some items need to be listed (scheduled) to lift limits. Others face breakage exclusions (think: glass, ceramics, art under accidental damage).
- Depreciated value: Unless specifically scheduled, settlement may be based on the actual cash value (ACV) – not ideal for collectibles whose market value can rise.
- Away-from-home and transit gaps: Off-premises limits can be tight, and shipping, showing, or moving items is where many Homeowners policies get restrictive.
You can schedule certain items onto your Homeowners policy to help with limits and valuation. That can be fine for a few pieces. Still, if you are buying, selling, shipping, displaying, or growing a collection, a dedicated collectibles policy is usually simpler, broader, and built for how collectors actually live.
A Better Fit: Stand-Alone Collectibles Insurance
Policies designed for collections typically offer:
- Coverage at home and away: Home, secondary locations, in transit, and at exhibitions/shows (as applicable).
- Accidental breakage protection for many categories that Homeowners policies often exclude.
- Market-value focus and flexible ways to insure (blanket totals or itemized).
- Low or no deductible options, so a minor mishap does not become a hefty bill.
- Streamlined setup: Often, no upfront appraisals or serial numbers for many categories – keep a simple inventory and photographs.
- Fine Print (The Helpful Kind): Coverage features and availability vary by collection type and underwriting; documentation may be required for higher-value items.
Mixed Collections? Easy.
Most people don’t collect just one thing. If your shelves look like “a little bit of everything” – sports cards plus a few watches, a small wine rack, a signed guitar, and some original art – we can usually bundle it into one policy with a total (blanket) amount and reasonable per-item limits. If certain pieces need special treatment (e.g., ultra-high-value or fragile), we can schedule them while keeping everything under one roof. Clean, simple, and flexible as your interests evolve.
Quick Compare: Homeowners/Condo vs. Collectibles Policy
Limits
- Homeowners/Condo: Special sublimits for categories; may require scheduling each item to raise limits.
- Collectibles Policy: Higher, collection-friendly limits; blanket or scheduled options.
Valuation
- Homeowners/Condo: Often ACV unless scheduled.
- Collectibles Policy: Designed to reflect market/agreed value approaches for collectibles.
Where Covered
- Homeowners/Condo: Tighter off-premises and transit protection.
- Collectibles Policy: Built for home, storage, transit, and shows (as applicable).
Deductible
- Homeowners/Condo: Unscheduled Personal Property typically uses your standard property deductible; scheduled items often have no deductible, but may still miss transit/show needs.
- Collectibles Policy: Low or $0 deductible options.
Who It’s For
- One-piece owners with a single high-value item – like a signed jersey, graded comic, rare watch, original artwork, or a vintage guitar.
- New collectors with a few meaningful pieces who want simple, right-sized protection.
- Growing collectors who buy/sell, ship, or attend shows.
- Seasoned collectors looking for market-aware coverage that scales.
Common categories: sports memorabilia and cards, comics, coins and currency, fine art and sculptures, wine, watches and jewelry, vintage toys and models, stamps, musical instruments, rare books and manuscripts, designer handbags, and more.
Only one special piece? You don’t need a giant collection to get covered. You can insure a single item or a small set with low or no deductible options and coverage that follows your item at home and in transit.
Smart Pairing: Keep Both
You still want your Homeowners/Condo policy for the structure, liability, and everyday contents. Add a Collectibles policy to protect the specialized, higher-value items with broader terms. No surprises, fewer headaches.
